A Book Review The Nature of Consciousness: Essays on college, the Unity of Mind and Matter. The Nature of Consciousness. Essays on the Unity of Mind and Matter. By Rupert Spira. Sahaja Publications/New Harbinger, 2017. Rupert Spira doesn’t beat around the bush. If you know him from his recent appearances at the SAND conference, or from his meetings and retreats in the UK or the States, you will likely have come away with the impression of an acute mind, uncompromising in its focus and equality gender essays intent, refusing to take a single step away from the reality of immediate experience. In this he embodies the male approach to knowledge, clarity personified, with an inevitability about the unfolding of his thoughts and words. This discipline is the great strength of Rupert’s recently-published book, The Nature of Consciousness . There is no speculation, no drifting to other realms of possibility where less ordered minds are fond of applicant essay traveling. This scholarly approach may also be an entry point for effective scientists clinging to applicant essay the materialist assumptions of their training, but increasingly uncomfortable about what they imply for the hard problem of consciousness. Deepak Chopra has written the Foreword to Rupert’s book.

They have appeared together at SAND conferences and made a fascinating coupling, Deepak the brilliant communicator and popularizer of enlightened thinking and Rupert’s precise and unwavering pragmatism. Deepak reports that he has gained deeper understanding from research thesis, Rupert than any other exponent of modern spirituality. The Nature of Consciousness is a remarkable book. You have only to college applicant essay see it and flip through a few pages to get a sense of the kind of writer Rupert Spira is, and the nature of his argument. The clean design inside and essay out reflects his creative sensitivity and mastery as a ceramic artist, and the paragraphs are well packed with syllables, sufficient vocabulary for a minutely argued demolition of the assumptions of the prevailing world culture. Perhaps never before has logical argument been brought so effectively and readably to conclusion a comprehensive investigation of consciousness.

The author is well aware of the irony of using words, and applicant a lot of them, and long ones, to talk about it. As he writes: Others amongst us who feel compelled to articulate reality in words try to make the best use of numbers or words these ill-adapted symbols, using them as skillfully as possible and in a way that evokes the reality of college applicant essay experience without ever confining it within the limits of language. In this he has succeeded, and the nondual missionaries among us will be happy to have an argument to equality gender essays counter those of our materialistic friends. There is college essay even hope that here we may have a text to accompany the death throes of the scientific paradigm. For the book is research thesis written as an argument, and breaking the college essay, stranglehold of materialism is its purpose. Rupert writes within this dialectic tradition, with Howevers and gender essays Therefores scattered throughout, not to mention plenty of italics to make quite sure we get it. As he writes so passionately in college, the Introduction, . . . the recognition of the fundamental reality of consciousness is the equality gender essays, prerequisite and a necessary and sufficient condition for an individual’s quest for lasting happiness and, at the same time, the foundation of world peace. Sometimes I wished The Nature of Consciousness was more like a manifesto, a little red book of applicant essay advaita, studied on effective for essay, buses, picked up in motel rooms; its pithy truth would end terrorism, bring agribusiness to its knees and reverse global warming.

That outcome may not happen so easily, and an impeccably argued couple of hundred pages is probably more persuasive to representatives of the status quo, more likely to get the attention of college applicant those game changers who are not so dogmatic to have lost sight of the merit of logic. Let’s hope they are not too offended by the statement that the materialist paradigm is a philosophy of despair and conflict, and have the guts to read on. It is worth it. They may even let Rupert’s fighting words sink in: The materialist point of view asserts the reality of that which is never experienced – matter – and denies that which alone is always experienced – consciousness itself. That is the tragedy and the absurdity of the materialistic perspective from which humanity is suffering. This perspective, Rupert repeats, is applicant nothing more than a belief and, as such, simply a popular religion . Like a good teacher, Rupert repeats himself often, and approaches the same conclusion from different directions. And like sages down the ages he trips a deft dance with metaphors, changing them to keep pace with the progress of gender essays his argument: old ones, new ones, a few repeated, with exponential benefit, again and again throughout the book the sun illuminating itself, the movie, and the screen it#8217;s playing on. It is a serious book with a serious purpose, but the essay, rather humorless progression of its argument is illuminated with deep insights from art and poetry – Shakespeare, Blake, Wordsworth, Tennyson delightful anecdotes, warmth and compassion for the human search for happiness, and beautiful writing.

Here is one wonderful phrase: A world made of matter – a calamitous assumption. The clarity and retail store authority that Rupert brings to his words make him a worthy ambassador of consciousness only at the court of materialism and college applicant science, and we hope that his intelligence and style will make inroads into its dogmatism, though it may be a while before they heed his call for an upgrade of the laws of physics to laws that govern the unfolding of mind rather than the behavior of matter. If I have one misgiving about The Nature of Consciousness it comes from the contrast between the issues papers, democratic nature of the message – that everyone is equally qualified to applicant investigate the nature of consciousness and the comparative inaccessibility of this particular investigation. The exhaustive argument got me wanting a shortened version, an Everyman’s Guide to The Nature of Consciousness, which I could refer to when materialism rears its head, and confidently leave in a motel room or on applicant, the bus. essay contest winner In the college applicant, summer of 2017, we partnered with one of Washington’s top foreign-policy outlets to bring college students’ voices into our nation’s foreign policy conversation and to take a small step toward restoring a healthy, balanced civic debate on the proper scale of our nation’s ambitions and actions abroad. We received a deluge of excellent submissions from young voices all across the country, all answering this question: “What benefits could a more restrained, careful foreign policy strategy offer to the United States?” First prize went to Andrew Beddow , who is also president of our University of Michigan chapter. In his essay, Beddow calls for America to set a clear grand strategy that recognizes the in an essay, world’s complexity and college essay, thus does not treat international problems as separate and readily fixable. Thus, “Intervention is occasionally justified, and the United States both improves the issues research papers, condition of mankind and benefits itself through its continued participation in international humanitarian efforts and multilateral cooperation. However, intervention must be guided by a grand strategy, one that explicitly enumerates the , core interests of the United States and limits activity abroad to the securing of applicant, these interests. Role Of Teacher In Society In Urdu. American policymakers must consider whether or not foreign adventures, e.g. taking a moral stand against Russian annexation of Crimea, are sufficiently important all-things-considered to outweigh the plausible negative consequences that will result from this action. In light of the gender, dynamic nature of the international order, we must also recognize the inherent unpredictability of intervention.

Prudence, not beneficence, should be the guiding virtue of foreign policy.” One of applicant, our runners up was Enea Gjoza of the Harvard Kennedy School. Gjoza’s essay examines our current strategy of global primacy – of “seeking to shape the world through frequent military intervention and by maintaining and exercising overwhelming dominance over numbers in an essay, potential competitors.” He argues that this strategy has come at a high price in blood and treasure, and yet has failed to make America safer. And this strategy is a departure from college applicant essay, America’s traditional posture of restraint. Under that approach, Gjoza writes, “As the other great powers of the day exhausted themselves in conflict against each other throughout the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century, the United States developed its economy and society in relative peace, intervening substantially only to tip the balance in the World Wars. This allowed the United States to emerge as an unmatched superpower after the wreckage of the Second World War, with an unscathed homeland and approximately half of the world’s GDP. Today, however, the United States is on the other end of the spectrum, taking upon itself the burden of maintaining the global order while other nations enjoy the benefits of peace and college applicant essay, commerce.” Our other runner up was Matthew Petti of Columbia University. Petti challenges the conventional view in Washington that America needs to double down on support for one of our most problematic allies, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – to research thesis treat their enemies as our own and to essay accept their account of the problems in their region. Petti’s essay highlights the failures of such an approach, calling the current U.S.-Saudi relationship “a valuable case study of equality gender essays, allied nations’ sometimes detrimental effect on U.S. foreign policy.” Thus, he writes, “U.S. support has essentially shielded Saudi Arabia from the applicant, negative effects of its campaign, removing incentives the kingdom has to restrain its own actions.

From the beginning of Saudi Arabia’s intervention in Yemen, the Obama administration supported the Saudi-led coalition with mid-air refueling and advanced munitions. This aid hasn’t quite made up for poor military leadership, but it has passed the mounting economic costs onto a foreign guarantor, allowing Saudi forces to maintain their technological edge despite a budget crisis in the kingdom. Consequently, American calls for a political solution have fallen on deaf ears; as the Trump administration considers removing some restrictions on support to the Saudi-led coalition, Riyadh will only be encouraged to pursue the disastrous status quo.” He adds that the war has enabled Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, one of the most dangerous branches of the terrorist group, to take advantage of the chaos, meaning that “while attempting to please a U.S. ally, America is essentially undermining its own domestic security, giving a geographic base to the people responsible for the USS Cole bombing and the Charlie Hebdo shooting.” We received many other excellent submissions that highlight the growing number of research thesis, talented young leaders across the political spectrum who are eager to college applicant essay bring prudence and contemporary issues, restraint back into our foreign policy.
